Creating growth, cutting carbon: making sustainable local transport happen

In its 19th January Local Transport White Paper, the Government has set out its policy direction on local transport. The White Paper sets the Government’s approach to shorter local journeys (so, trips of five miles or less) with the intention to support its wider goals of promoting economic growth and reducing carbon. There’s a lot of weight given to immediate gains from local interventions, especially when it comes to job creation.

The White Paper is fairly light on new policies; rather it is a helpful compendium of where the Coalition Government has got to since coming to power last May. Importantly though, it does set out the context for the new Local Sustainable Transport Fund, and highlights examples across the country of ‘good practice’ on sustainable travel. In this guide, we provide an analysis of what the White Paper means for local transport.
